Many clients come to us with a return that stopped being simple: equity from work, a rental upstate, a move between states, money still held overseas. We file it correctly and tell you in plain language what it means for next year.

Local experience that shapes the work
Working in New York City since 2008 has given us deep experience with the international, multi-state and city-specific tax issues common here.
New York brings together the United Nations, permanent missions, consulates, global employers, financial firms and people whose income and assets cross borders. Over the years, our team has learned how these institutions and working patterns translate into real filing obligations.
Our regular NYC work includes:

That is why the firm keeps dedicated guidance on taxation for World Bank employees, tax essentials for H-1B and L-1 visa holders, applying for an ITIN and streamlined domestic offshore procedures. It is also why the team works in seven languages: English, Bulgarian, Russian, Ukrainian, Chinese, Spanish and Albanian.
That experience helps us check whether your visa history changes your residency position, whether overseas accounts are reportable, and how New York State and City rules interact with the federal return.

If you live in the five boroughs, you pay both New York State and New York City income tax.
New York State runs its own personal income tax. New York City runs a separate resident income tax on top of it. Move to Yonkers and you pay a city surcharge instead. Move across the Hudson and the whole calculation changes.
Three New York rules catch people out more than any others.
The first is statutory residence. You can be domiciled somewhere else entirely and still be taxed by New York as a resident if you keep a permanent place of abode in the state and spend more than 183 days here. Any part of a day spent in New York counts as a full day, with narrow exceptions such as travel straight through the state or inpatient treatment at a medical facility.
The second is the convenience of the employer rule. If your employer is in New York and you work from home in another state for your own convenience rather than because the job requires it, New York can still treat those days as New York days. New York applies the rule to remote arrangements that began during the pandemic.
The third is the city's Unincorporated Business Tax. Sole proprietors and partnerships carrying on a trade or business in New York City can owe a city tax entirely separate from their state return. That includes freelancers working as sole proprietors.
Then there are the smaller things that add up: sales tax registration and filing for businesses selling into the state, New York's own estate tax, separate from the federal one, and the School Tax Relief credit for homeowners.
George Dimov holds CPA licenses in New York and California, and the firm is federally registered to prepare returns in all fifty states. That combination matters if you are a New York resident with income in other states. See how multi-state tax returns are handled.

Who picks up your file
Five senior people handle the bulk of the work. Which one you get depends on what is wrong, not on who is free.

President
George runs the firm and tends to take the files other accountants have handed back. Master's, Bachelor's and Associate degrees, more than twenty years across accounting and consulting, and CPA licenses in both New York and California. He usually handles multi-state and cross-border cases himself. Works in Bulgarian and English.

Senior Tax Manager
Stan oversees the tax practice, which in day-to-day terms means he decides how your return gets handled and who handles it. Bachelor's degree, an MBA, and an IRS Enrolled Agent, so he can represent you directly before the IRS. Works in English and Russian.

Senior Tax Manager
If your pay includes RSUs, options or ESPP shares, or you have filing obligations in another country, Xintian is usually the one who picks it up. Master's and Bachelor's in Accounting, a CPA, and a specialty in international taxation and equity compensation compliance. Works in Chinese and English.

Senior Tax Accountant
Anvar takes the awkward ones: depreciation recapture, amended returns going back several years, research and development credits, and carryovers that were not tracked properly. Bachelor's in Accounting, CPA and Enrolled Agent. Works in English and Russian.

Senior Accountant
If you owe money to the IRS that you cannot pay, Tsagan is the person to ask for. Specializes in tax debt settlement, offers in compromise and forensic accounting. Bachelor's and Master's in accounting, CPA and Enrolled Agent. Works in Russian and English.
