24 g concentrate per transaction
Per-visit, state-tracked
Not random — closely linked to health, tax, and enforcement
What are the purchase limits?
Cannabis flower
3 oz
≈ 85 grams
Up to three ounces of cannabis flower per single transaction.
Cannabis concentrates
24 g
vapes, oils, resins
Up to twenty-four grams of concentrates per single transaction.
Per-visit rule. It does not matter whether multiple dispensaries are visited on the same day. Every distinct sale is logged through a state-monitored tracking system.
Why are there limits?
Tax integrity
The New York cannabis excise tax and the broader New York recreational marijuana tax system vary in parallel to product-level reporting. Quantity caps assist in verifying legitimate transactions and preventing unregistered reselling.
Health safeguards
Purchase caps align with risk mitigation strategies outlined by public health officials. These figures are considered thresholds beyond which personal use becomes questionable.
Law enforcement clarity
Possession limits mirror the purchase limits. Aligning the two lets state officials and legal authorities locate unauthorized activities more clearly.
What happens if you try to exceed the limit?
Transactions beyond the allowable limit will be blocked by the dispensary system itself. Licensed sellers are prohibited from overriding the tracking software.
Overriding may result in penalty payments or even license suspension. It further influences the dispensary’s reporting accuracy in accordance with the New York cannabis tax regulations.
Purchasing as a medical patient
Different rules apply to certified medical cannabis patients. They are permitted higher quantities in line with the dosage and physician recommendations.
These amounts are still subject to tracking and taxation within the broader New York cannabis excise tax system.

“We do work 7 days a week during tax season. And when we don’t have tax season, I make sure to move around people’s schedule so they can at least have some quality of life while being able to serve the clients when they need to be served.”
George Dimov, CPA
“They’ve helped me file my quarterly sales and payroll taxes, manage income tax, and offered guidance where I had no idea what I was doing.”
