Does how you file affect how fast your refund arrives?

A New York CPA on refund processing times. What actually speeds a refund up, what makes no difference, and when to start worrying about it.

  • E-filed refunds arrive within about three weeks; mailed returns take six weeks or more
  • Amended returns run eight to twelve weeks, up to sixteen in some cases
  • Certain refundable credits are held by law until mid-February, however early you filed
  • A mismatch in bank details, name, or ID can pull the return into manual review

Key takeaways

E-file beats mail by weeks

The IRS issues most refunds on e-filed returns within three weeks of the date you e-filed. On a mailed return the IRS takes six weeks or more, counted from the day it receives the envelope rather than the day you posted it.

Amended returns take much longer

On an amended return the IRS asks for eight to twelve weeks, and up to sixteen in some cases, whichever way you filed the original.

Certain credits trigger a mid-February hold

The IRS holds refunds on returns claiming certain refundable credits until mid February by law, however early you filed.

01By filing method

Typical refund timing, by filing method

Typical timings. Anything that needs manual review falls outside them.

E-FILED

~3 weeks

from the date you e-file

The IRS starts processing the day it accepts an e-filed return.

MAILED / PAPER

6+ weeks

from the day the IRS receives it, not the day you post it

An IRS employee has to open the envelope and type the return in before processing starts.

AMENDED

8–16 weeks

depending on how the original return was filed

Eight to twelve weeks typically, and up to sixteen in some cases.
02What moves the needle

What actually speeds a refund up — and what doesn't

The IRS starts processing an e-filed return on the day it accepts it. With a mailed return, an IRS employee first has to open the envelope and type the return into the system. The timings below are the ranges the IRS publishes for normal processing, and anything it pulls for manual review sits outside them.

Doesn't help

  • Filing on the first day. You join the queue earlier without moving up it, and if you file before your last 1099 shows up you will be amending the return later.
  • Checking the status repeatedly. The IRS updates Where's My Refund once a day, so a second look the same afternoon shows you the same screen. The status appears within 24 hours of e-filing a current year return, and about four weeks after you post a paper one.
  • Calling. Before the standard timeframe has passed, an IRS agent can tell you only what Where's My Refund already shows you.
  • Paying for a refund advance. A lender advances you money against the refund and charges you for it. The IRS processes your return on exactly the same schedule.

Helps

  • E-file rather than paper. The single biggest factor, and it is not close.
  • Bank details the IRS can actually pay into. The IRS began phasing out paper refund checks at the end of September 2025, so nearly every refund now goes by direct deposit and the account number matters more than it used to. If the details are missing or invalid, the IRS sends you a CP53E notice and holds the refund until you fix them. Correct them in your IRS Individual Online Account and the IRS usually releases the refund within about seven days. Leave the notice unanswered for thirty days and the IRS issues a paper check six weeks after the date on the notice.
  • A return the IRS can match. Where a name, a tax ID or a reported figure does not match its records, the IRS pulls the return for manual review, and every timing above stops applying.
03The law

The credit hold that delays some refunds until mid-February

Congress bars the IRS from issuing a refund on a return claiming certain refundable credits before the middle of February, whenever and however you filed. Congress passed the rule to cut fraudulent refund claims on those credits.

If you claim those credits, filing in January does not get you paid in January.

04Late refunds

When to start chasing a late refund

E-filed and past three weeks.

Check the tracker. Something may need attention.

Mailed and past six weeks since the IRS received it.

Still inside the published range, and worth confirming the IRS has the return at all.

Amended and past sixteen weeks.

Now outside the published range.
05Offsets

Why your refund can be smaller than the return says

The government can take part or all of a federal refund to pay other debts you owe, after the IRS certifies the refund for payment and before the money reaches you. The notice explaining it comes separately by mail and may arrive after the deposit does.

What gets taken.

Past due child support, federal agency non-tax debts such as a defaulted student loan, state income tax obligations, and certain state unemployment compensation debts.

Who takes it.

The Bureau of the Fiscal Service runs the Treasury Offset Program and issues the refund. Its notice shows the original refund amount, the amount it took and the agency it paid.

Who to call.

The agency that was owed the money. The Bureau does not discuss the debt and cannot return what it collected, and the IRS is not told the details of the offset. Call the IRS only if the refund figure on the notice differs from the figure on your return.

Old federal tax works differently.

The IRS applies your refund to a federal balance from an earlier year itself, sends its own notice, and is the agency to talk to about it.

If the debt is your spouse's.

Where you filed jointly and the debt belongs to your spouse alone, claim your share back with Form 8379. The IRS gives typical processing of about 11 weeks filed electronically with a joint return, about 14 weeks filed on paper with one, and about 8 weeks filed on its own after the joint return has gone through. An error on the form adds to all three.
You can check before you file. The Treasury Offset Program call center on 800-304-3107 will tell you whether an agency has submitted a debt against you.
06IRS letters

IRS letters that hold up a refund

If the IRS sends you a letter, your refund waits until you reply. Answer it and the IRS restarts processing from the date it receives your response, so a letter sitting unopened for three weeks costs you three weeks.
Bank details it cannot use.A CP53E notice means the IRS could not pay the refund into the account on the return. Fix the details in your IRS Individual Online Account and the IRS usually releases it within about seven days.
Identity verification. The IRS asks you to confirm you filed the return before it releases anything. You verify online or by phone, using the control number printed on the letter.
A figure it cannot match. The IRS asks for a document supporting an amount on the return, often a W-2, a 1099 or a withholding figure.
A math correction. The IRS tells you it changed a figure and adjusted your refund. Reply if you disagree, and reply within the window the letter gives you.
What not to do.Do not file a second return because the first one has gone quiet. The IRS will treat it as a duplicate and both will slow down.
Send us the letter and we will tell you what it wants and draft the reply.

From the record

On complicated returns, and on why do-it-yourself apps get it wrong

"Taxpayers approach us after doing their taxes in TurboTax or on H&R Block or a do-it-yourself app, and they have a huge tax bill and they don't know why they have it. They don't know even how it came about. They sometimes don't have the money for it."

"My 2025 taxes were genuinely complicated -- federal and Maryland state… My return was ready for review within a week, and both filings were e-filed and confirmed accepted shortly after."

07FAQ

Common questions about refund timing

What do the stages on Where's My Refund mean?

There are three. Return Received means the IRS has your return and is working through it. Refund Approved means the IRS has settled the amount and set a payment date, which the tool then shows you. Refund Sent means the money has left the IRS for your bank or the post.

Does still being processed mean something has gone wrong?

Not by itself. The message means the IRS needs longer than the normal path allows, and the typical timings stop applying once it appears. Most returns clear it without you doing anything. The IRS writes to you if it wants a document or needs you to confirm your identity.

My refund says approved. When does the money arrive?

Where's My Refund shows you a date once the IRS approves the refund. After the status turns to Refund Sent, allow your bank a few business days to post the deposit. The IRS releasing the money and your bank crediting the account are two separate steps.

How long can the IRS hold a refund while it reviews the return?

The IRS sets no fixed limit. A CP05 notice asks you to allow 60 days from the date on the notice and not to call before then. If the IRS then asks for documents, allow another 45 to 60 days from the day you send them. Some reviews run longer.

Does the IRS pay interest when it holds a refund for months?

Yes, on a refund issued more than 45 days after the later of the filing deadline or the day you filed. The IRS works it out and adds it to the refund without you asking. The rate changes quarterly, and the interest counts as taxable income for the year you receive it.

Can I track an amended return on Where's My Refund?

No. Amended returns have a separate tool, Where's My Amended Return, which shows Received, Adjusted and Completed and updates weekly rather than daily. Our page on amended returns covers the timing and what each status means.
